AMR Action Fund CEO Henry Skinner authored a piece for Harvard Medical School’s Bioethics Blog, examining antimicrobial resistance through the lens of bioethics and arguing that AMR is not simply a scientific or public health challenge, but one shaped by human decisions about how antibiotics are developed, financed, prescribed, distributed, and preserved.
Skinner explores the difficult tradeoffs at the heart of the challenge: ensuring patients have access to effective antibiotics today while preserving them for future generations; encouraging responsible stewardship while sustaining investment in new treatments; and expanding access to antibiotics in countries bearing a disproportionate burden of resistant infections.
Ultimately, he argues that solving AMR requires aligning innovation, access, and stewardship, and confronting fundamental questions about how society values antibiotics and shares responsibility for sustaining them.
